Austin only major city to add jobs in last year - Dayton Business Journal:

The region added about 3,400 jobs between April 2008 and April 2009, making it the only one of the nation'es 38 largest cities to post a job new data from the Bureaj of Labor Statistics shows. This is the thirs consecutive month that Austin has outperformedd all of theother U.S. cities with labor forces of 750,00p or more. The unemployment rate for April stoodat 5.8 The 0.4 percent increase in job total is modest, but still a bettert showing than cities such as Portlanx (down 4.7 percent) and Raleigh, N.C. (dow 3.3 percent).
Jobs in goodsx producing industries in the Austin area dropper by 500 jobsin April, a slowdown from the rapid pace of recen losses, according to an analysis of the data from the Capitak Area Council of Governments. Retail, hotel, and restaurantr jobs are all up from this timelast year. And professionao and business service sectof employment is back toits all-time high last seen in Octobe 2008. But another key sectorf for the region, technology, isn't doing quite as Computer, semiconductor and other electronic componenft manufacturing isstill falling. Jobs in the semiconductor segment fellto 15,7009 jobs, back to spring 2006 totals. As Texae cities go, Austin's 5.
8 perceng unemployment rate was one ofthe healthiest. Dallas-For Worth stood at 6.6 percent in April and Houstonat 6.3 percent. Only San Antonio'zs rate was lower than Austin's at 5.4 percent. Smaller metrko areas including McAllen, Brownsville and Beaumount all had rates abovs8 percent.
